Major Alex Klinner Obituary, Death: Remembering the U.S. Air Force Pilot Killed in Iraq
AUBURN, ALABAMA — October 23, 2026 — Major John “Alex” Klinner, a U.S. Air Force pilot remembered for his leadership, commitment to service and devotion to his family, continues to be honored by his community months after his death in a military aircraft crash in western Iraq.
Klinner, 33, was among six American airmen killed on March 12, 2026, when a KC-135 refueling aircraft crashed while supporting U.S. military operations in the region. His death left his wife, Libby, and their three young children grieving the loss of a husband and father.
Raised in Auburn, Alabama, Klinner graduated from Auburn High School in 2011 and earned a mechanical engineering degree from Auburn University in 2016. He entered the Air Force through the university’s Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 2017 and completed pilot training in November 2018.
He later served with the 99th Air Refueling Squadron, where he became chief of squadron standardization and evaluation. In that role, he helped oversee aircrew training, flight proficiency and operational standards.
His military career included deployments in 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2026. Colleagues and community members have remembered him for his professionalism, leadership and willingness to serve others.
Beyond his military responsibilities, Klinner was devoted to his family. He and his wife, Libby, were raising three young children, including twins.
Family members and friends have described him as a caring husband, father and servant leader whose impact extended beyond his military duties. His loss has been felt deeply by his family, fellow airmen, former classmates and the Alabama communities where he grew up and lived.
Klinner’s alma mater and community continue to honor his memory. Auburn University has announced plans to recognize him with a pregame military flyover ahead of its October 24 football game against LSU. A memorial scholarship has also been established to support mechanical engineering students participating in Air Force ROTC.
These tributes aim to carry forward his commitment to leadership, education and public service.
Major Klinner’s life is remembered not only for his military achievements, but also for the family he cherished and the people he inspired. His legacy continues through the loved ones he leaves behind and the community members determined to honor his service.
