According to the Calgary Police Service, the collision occurred at approximately 1:10 p.m. in the 800 block of Saddletowne Circle N.E., near 80 Avenue N.E. The incident involved eight vehicles and triggered a large emergency response.

Investigators believe the crash began when a moving Calgary Transit bus struck a truck travelling in the same direction. The truck moved into an adjacent lane, sideswiped an SUV and struck a box truck.

The bus continued forward, striking a sedan and pushing it through the intersection. It then collided with a second Calgary Transit bus that was stopped at a bus stop.

The second bus, which was powered by natural gas, caught fire after the collision. The flames intensified rapidly, resulting in an explosion and extensive damage to the vehicle.

Firefighters arrived alongside police and emergency medical personnel. Crews extinguished the fire, rescued a trapped bus driver and assessed the damaged vehicles.

Police confirmed that three passengers aboard the bus that caught fire died at the scene. Authorities subsequently worked to identify the deceased and notify their families.

A total of 19 people were reported injured. Ten were transported to hospital by ambulance, while others received medical assessment and treatment. One person suffered life-altering injuries, and another sustained serious injuries. The driver of the first bus was trapped and required technical rescue assistance before being taken to hospital.

A Calgary police officer also suffered minor injuries while responding to the emergency. Officials praised the coordinated work of firefighters, police officers, paramedics and transit personnel.

Calgary Police Service collision investigators are examining the sequence of impacts to determine how the crash unfolded. Fire investigators are separately investigating the origin and cause of the bus fire.

Authorities said it was too early to determine whether impairment, speeding or distraction contributed to the collision. Investigators are reviewing available evidence, including video footage.
