Northwestern University Student Dies After Being Pulled From Lake Michigan

The Northwestern University community is mourning the death of a student who was pulled from Lake Michigan near the university’s Evanston campus on Wednesday morning, October 21, 2026. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and the cause of death has not been publicly established.

According to reports citing the Evanston Police Department, emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 7 a.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing someone in the water near 70 Arts Circle Drive, close to Northwestern’s lakefront campus.

Fire department water-rescue personnel recovered an unresponsive woman from the lake and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). She was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities subsequently identified the woman as Saba Hani Alkaabi, 19, a Northwestern University student who was not from the Evanston area.

Evanston police and Northwestern University police are investigating the incident. Authorities have said that foul play is not suspected, but that does not establish how the student entered the water or determine the cause of death.

Despite online headlines describing the incident as a suicide, officials have not publicly confirmed that conclusion in the reports reviewed. It is important to avoid speculation while the investigation continues and to respect the privacy of the student’s family and friends.

Northwestern University expressed condolences to the student’s loved ones and said it was providing support services to members of the university community affected by the tragedy.

Police also reiterated safety warnings about Lake Michigan. Hazard signs are posted along the university’s shoreline, and officials urged residents and visitors to check lake conditions, obey posted warnings, and stay off break walls and rocks.

The loss of a young student is deeply painful for family, friends, classmates, and the wider campus community. As the investigation continues, verified information from university officials and law enforcement remains the most reliable basis for understanding what happened.
