Donnie Iris, the celebrated American rock singer and songwriter best known for the hit songs “Ah! Leah!” and “The Rapper,” has died at the age of 83. His death on October 26, 2026, marks the end of a remarkable musical career spanning more than six decades, leaving fans, fellow musicians, and Pittsburgh’s music community mourning a performer whose voice became part of rock history.

Born Dominic Ierace on February 28, 1943, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, Iris grew up in nearby Ellwood City and developed an early passion for singing. His national breakthrough came as a member of the Jaggerz, whose 1970 single “The Rapper,” co-written by Iris, reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

He later joined Wild Cherry before forming Donnie Iris and the Cruisers with keyboardist and songwriter Mark Avsec. Their 1980 hit “Ah! Leah!” became his signature song, followed by popular recordings including “Love Is Like a Rock” and “My Girl.” His distinctive vocals, energetic performances, and enduring connection with audiences made him a beloved figure in western Pennsylvania and beyond.

After receiving treatment for bladder cancer, which was diagnosed in 2023, he returned to the stage and delivered his final performance in Pittsburgh on September 28, 2026. He announced his retirement from future concerts on October 9, citing ongoing health concerns.
